Five Cool Things You Might Never Have Considered Framing 2

Five Cool Things You Might Never Have Considered Framing

At our framing shop in north London, we believe that framing is not just for everyone, but also for everything (well, almost). Framing specialists can sometimes appear to be rather traditional and serious, but here at FRMD, we are totally non-judgmental about what we frame, and we don’t care if it’s technically art or not.

We love fine art, photographs and limited edition prints as much as the next framers, but we also love those fun or surprising pieces that hold a special meaning for you. Here are some cool things that can look unexpectedly brilliant in a frame.

Book covers

Arguably, book jacket design is an artform in its own right, fusing together the best elements of graphic design, typography, illustration, and poster design. Classic novels, plays and poetry collections in particular can be a catalyst for the designer’s imagination, resulting in some truly stunning images.

If you are lucky enough to own a classic book jacket such as E. Michael Mitchell’s 1951 design for The Catcher in the Rye, or Leslie Holland’s 1932 cover for Brave New World, then why not celebrate it with a bespoke frame? It doesn’t need to be a famous iconic design to be worthy of framing either— it could simply be a cover of a book that you love.

If you have several favourites or a collection of classics, you could make a gallery wall arrangement. It’s perfect for a home or public library, an office or indeed a book shop.

Maps and travel ephemera

Travel can be the best education, and often our most formative experiences happen not at school or uni, but when we are exploring new places, experiencing different cultures and meeting new people outside of our usual horizons.

If this resonates with you, no doubt you have a drawer or a box full of treasured travel ephemera, such as boarding passes or bus or train tickets, old stamped passports, tourist information leaflets, or even cafe menus or trinkets that you picked up here and there. Maybe you just love maps and want to see an area that means something to you every day.

These items are just as much a part of your story as the millions of photographs that you no doubt took along the way. They also make for a cool and unique gallery wall in a home office, kitchen, hallway or living room.

Sports memorabilia

Got a signed football shirt, a favourite club scarf or even a pair of sweaty socks that you wore when you scored the winning goal in your Sunday league? Perhaps give them a quick wash first, and we’ll find the perfect frame to show off your sports memorabilia (and keep them safe from moths).

Vintage vinyl covers

Album covers can hold all sorts of memories and emotions, reminding us of special times in our lives, people we knew or places we’ve been. If you’ve got some classic vinyl covers that are too good to hide away in a storage system, bring them along and we’ll frame them. If you still want to access the record, we can probably sort that out for you too.

Sentimental items

Sentimental…so what? If there’s an item or image that gives you those warm fuzzy feelings, then you want to see it every day. This might be a piece of your children’s artwork that deserves more than sticking on the fridge with a magnet; your gran’s foolproof casserole recipe; or maybe wedding invites, postcards from the past, or cute love notes.

We’ll find the right frame to give it the wall space that it deserves. Perfect wall decor for kitchens, home offices, or family rooms.

So there you have it: if you need a framers without the formality, we’re here for you. We love a challenge, so if you’ve got something flat(ish) that holds a special meaning for you, or simply makes you smile, bring it along and we’ll help to give it a new lease of life.
